Because there's no user-manual

When we become parents there is no 'user-manual' and although love comes naturally for our children, we all face difficulties at some point or another – from babies who won't sleep at night and toddlers who throw tantrums, to the 'whatever' stage of pre-teens to the unruly teenager.

The pressure to be brilliant at a role that most of us feel totally unprepared for has never been more acute….goal driven and slick presentations are the name of the game at work and then suddenly we are faced with a child who really isn't going to conform to tight deadlines or doing what they are told to do.

Admitting that bringing up your child can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming is no longer taboo or seen as a sign of weakness. More and more parents are actively seeking additional advice and support to gain tried and tested tools and techniques which work to help build a positive family environment for all!

Parenting programmes and workshops

As a mother of a teenage daughter and with my brain geek hat on I enrolled on a course to understand what was going on in a teenage brain and why they behave the way they do in the hope I could understand what support I could give in the most resourceful way.

The information I gained was extremely useful and gave me a positive framework to work around. I then decided to qualify as a facilitator and now deliver workshops and courses for parents through the Positive Parenting Programmes which are designed to be fun, interactive and practical.

The main aim is to provide you with:

  • Strategies which will help you remain calm even when your buttons are being firmly pushed!
  • Be in control with a framework for setting and keeping boundaries
  • Build confidence and emotional security in your child/children
  • Help manage your child's emotions, including anger
  • Build good relationships through effective communication

Workshops for children and teenagers
I run regular workshops for primary and secondary school children to give them tips on how to be more confident, how to deal with bullying, coping with stress and how to communicate effectively.

I hold individual parenting sessions and also counsel/coach teenagers to help them deal with stress, bullying, confidence, anger and conflict resilience, relationships and body image.

Teenage Mental Health

As a parent you are either contemplating this well documented rocky development stage or are already in the thick of it!

We are all conditioned to expect the worst – the arguing, selfishness, annoying habits, unsuitable friends, rebellion and swinging moods. The real difficulty for us all is knowing whether this emotional rollercoaster is normal or whether there are underlying fears and concerns that your son or daughter is finding hard to express.

This is compounded by their need for separateness and distance which makes it very difficult for parents to offer the advice and support they may well need.

Common issues that you may be concerned about:

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, usual activities or hobbies
  • Sleep problems (insomnia, sleeplessness or nightmares)
  • Hyperactivity or irritability
  • Decline in school performance regardless of how hard they are working
  • Frequent bouts of anger or aggression or 'acting out'
  • Frequent and excessive anxiety or worry
  • Feeling down - possible depression or bipolar tendencies
  • Defiant or destructive behaviour
  • Lack of energy and 'I'm not good at anything' type of discussions
  • Appetite – weight gain or loss

'Acting out' could be if your son or daughter is being bullied at school and then recreates this scenario at home.

If you are concerned about your teenager than I can help by providing a neutral and objective setting to enable the young person to find better ways in which to understand and express themselves and communication with others more effectively.

  • Discover ways of overcoming worries, pressures and negative behaviours
  • Gain confidence and self-belief in their abilities
  • Improve communication levels
  • Learn to deal with anger and aggression
  • Develop strategies for bullying at school
