How I work

A necessary bit of rambling

Through my psychology training I help people to train their brains to work in the most effective and resourceful ways.
I thought long and hard about separating this out in to business, sport and life but then I decided that I didn't need to…why?
Because they all cross over in to the same place…your brain! The way we think dictates how we behave and so if we keep thinking the same way then we are going to carry on doing the same thing! (Yes this took me five years of training to work this out!) and, in addition to this here are my top five major things we do that sabotage us in terms of moving forward/achieving/performing/being happy/confident and a lot more:

•           We tend to remember what hasn't gone right for us rather than what has!
•           We show displeasure in our body language which in turn sends a message to our brain about how unhappy we are!
•           We concentrate on what we don't want rather than what we do
•           We beat ourselves up with lots of negative self-talk
•           We base our sense of worth on expectations that are pitched far too high

And from this much shortened list, you can see how easy it is to feel like you are going round in circles without achieving what you want!

How I help you achieve your potential

How many times have you watched a sporting performance, or attended a stimulating workshop and/or listened to an inspirational speaker and thought 'right that's it – I am going to do things differently' and as much as you talk a good story nothing actually changes (I've got lots of tee-shirts for this!) and it wasn't till I did my training that I understood why! Because although at a conscious level we tell ourselves that we can do something, unless we are giving our brain evidence that this is the case nothing can change!

And unless we de-clutter in terms of negative emotion it is just too much for us to take on board because frankly it is much easier for our brains (who will always take the least energetic route!) to keep doing the same old thing. This is where I come in and I believe (sorry bit evangelical!) that in order for you to have a long term success story there is a need to:

•           Unclutter – any unhelpful emotions and thinking patterns you may have
•           Re-energise – know what your strengths are and how you can use them
•           Re-adjust – your thinking and behavioural patterns to give a positive and resourceful outcome
•           We beat ourselves up with lots of negative self-talk
•           Practice – practice really does make perfect – it is the doing that changes everything!

If you are happy to go ahead we agree a way forward that fits what you want! I don't have any standardised programmes because we are all different and one size really doesn't fit all! We can also agree costs as I tend to charge per programme rather than per hour as it is much more cost-effective for you in terms of time and money.

Normally we agree to meet for four sessions spread over 4 -6 weeks depending on our mutual availability. I work from my 'brain training den' in the garden of my home in Esher, Surrey which is very easy to get to off the A3 with unlimited parking and access.
(Notice I don't use the word 'clinic' – the word drives me nuts as you are not ill or asking for help with a medical condition!)
We regularly review how it is working for you and how you would like to continue.

As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I work in accordance with the BACP Code of Ethics and work in complete confidence with you. I also receive regular supervision from an accredited supervisor and attend numerous up-to-date training modules and workshops.
Oh and I read every book available that involves anything to do with our minds and regularly test out theories on my long suffering friends and family – the research and understanding of how our brain works has been amazing in the last year and scientists are finding out more every day so it is so crucial to be up to date with the latest information.
